Baja SAE Competition 2017

Against a backdrop of Caterpillar heavy equipment, the University of Calgary Schulich Off-Road team competed at the 2017 Baja SAE 07-11 June 2017.  Vladimir Panlilio, who has been volunteering as faculty advisor, accompanied the U of C engineering students to the Caterpillar Edwards Demonstration & Learning Center in Peoria, Illinois.

Started in 1976, the present Baja SAE is a technical competition open to all undergraduate and graduate engineering students.  The competition simulates real-world engineering design, testing, and manufacturing of a prototype off-road, rugged, single-seat vehicle.  In the year-long project that culminates in a grueling competition, students are challenged with technical rule constraints that change every year.  Students are exposed to what one can expect from conceptualizing, developing, and launching a real-world product.  Budgeting, financing, resourcing, product team organization, product promotion, technical design, manufacturing, and testing are some of the activities that the project team has to tackle.  And, in addition, the students have to manage their educational priorities.

For 2017, 30 students comprised the U of C Schulich Off-Road team and 16 attended at the Caterpillar Edwards Demonstration & Learning Center.  SAMAC congratulates the Schulich Off-Road team and thanks its sponsors for another successful year.
