John has over 27 years of architectural experience.  John’s firm has been involved in many retail and industrial projects, primarily smaller scale development related to individual businesses, located in Western Canada and the United States.

For the past 20 years, John’s focus has been two fold:  small building renovations (specializing in residential, industrial, commercial and institutional) and historical restoration projects.  John has been personally responsible for over 1000+ projects from new to renovations to reconstruction.  Presently, he has several development projects initiated by his family businesses.

Above all else, John seeks to create inspiring spaces, enhancing human lives through the creation of beautiful spatial environments. In order to do this, he follows a robust process of design that brings the work to life through sketches, model-making and visualizations, ensuring the client feels confident in the design. With decades of experience in project management, he ensures construction is completed through to the smallest detail.

Background – John was born in Los Angeles, California. When he was eight years old, his family relocated back to Canada and chose Calgary as their home.  From the age of nine, at a teacher’s suggestion, he began his formal instruction in painting. When he was fourteen, he performed in his first Opera, La Boheme, at the Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary with the Calgary Opera.  His love of music has led him into performances with the Calgary Opera at the Jubilee Auditorium for the past 20 years. He has performed and studied Music at the Banff Centre of Fine Art, sang with the Vancouver Chamber Choir, toured with the Calgary Boy’s Choir, and several more.

John earned his architectural degree, at the top in his class for the entire 5 year program, from the University of Idaho, Moscow.  After completing his studies, he returned to Calgary in 1990 at the newly adapted firm of John Hallett Architect Ltd.  He has worked exclusively in Western Canada and the northern states since then.

On a personal note, John swims weekly with a swim club, enjoys skiing at his chalet in Kimberley, B.C. and sketching and painting when he has time.
