SAMAC has investigated numerous injury incidents, not involving vehicles, where a detailed engineering analysis of the situation has enabled clients to make informed decisions regarding whether the incident actually occurred as alleged, which scenario was technically more likely, and if building code requirements are an issue. Examples of typical investigations include:

Injury Causation

  • Ladder falls, role of ladder and persons holding the ladder
  • Trip and falls versus magnitude and location of hazard
  • Playground equipment failures
  • Slip and fall on snow covered steps when no snow had fallen for weeks
  • Scenario analysis of ‘skiing’ down a wooden wheelchair ramp

Building Codes & Industry Standard Reviews

  • Building code analysis of stairs, rails, ramps, interior steps, doors, automated doors, etc
  • Ladder testing to CSA standards
  • Walking surfaces – testing of travel surfaces, including wood, tile, concrete, etc. to assess whether they meet industry standards.

When addressing occupant injuries, medical and occupant information will be required. As necessary, a biomechanical expert can also be requested to assist in assessing injury mechanisms, probable causation and seatbelt effectiveness.

Many investigations concern low speed/minimal damage collisions. With our extensive in-house low speed expertise and testing capability, the available information can be analyzed to determine the collision severity.
